The Roman Numeral Converter works both directions for 1–3999 using standard subtractive notation (IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40 …) — for dates, clock faces, movie credits and outlines.
Standard notation has no symbol above M (1000) and repeats a symbol at most three times — larger values need overline notation that plain text can't express.
